Hi Everyone,
Happy New Year!
The Northeast just experienced an extended and extreme cold front. So I made it a point to stay inside as much as possible. As I looked around my own house, I became more convinced than ever that draperies can make or break a room. However, how you hang them, and what you hang them on is just as important.
The Hardware: My favorite company to use for drapery rods is Vesta. They offer a great variety of simple, beautiful rods that are meant to show off your draperies. You can pair any of their designs with a cool, sleek drapery to create your own signature style. From Traditional to Midcentury Modern to Hollywood Regency to Art Deco and everything in between. Here are some of my favorites.
This bling style is pure Hollywood Regency and would pair perfectly with the burnout sheers I mentioned last time. It comes in several finishes including those you see here. Brushed Brass and Brushed Nickel.
These gorgeous options would go with just about anything!
The Installation: I always recommend hanging your curtains at ceiling height. This will maximize the light that shines through the window. It also makes the room feel larger because the walls look taller.
This technique comes in especially handy when a room has windows of different heights. Having all the rods at ceiling level will create balance.
Another important thing to remember! Make sure your rod is wide enough, on both sides of the window, so that when the curtains are totally open you can see all the glass, but none of the frame. If the curtains are forced to hang within your window frame, they will block light and make the window look smaller. In turn, your room feels smaller. I recommend extending the rod 5-10 inches on either side of the window frame.
The Draperies: How your draperies fall to the floor is more important than you might think. And there are several options to consider.
Less than an inch above the floor: If you want your draperies to hang without any break at all, so they hang totally straight, then this is the best option for you. The draperies don’t touch the floor, they hover just above it.
At the floor: This is the hardest length to pull off, but it’s the most elegant. You have to precisely measure from the rod to the floor including the rings/clips and/or hooks that you’re using. You’ll end up with a gorgeous, totally custom look.
The Puddle: Here the draperies create a pool on the floor. This look has a feminine feel and is especially good at showing off a really beautiful fabric. In fact, if you’re going with this look, the fabric should be thick and luxurious. Otherwise the effect can just look accidental.
Until next time, stay warm.
Surround yourself with vintage flamingo or palm tree print fabrics…and you just might feel like you’re in Florida!
Best, Cami
