Three Home Theatre Design Trends

The home theatre room has just about become a mandatory addition to any truly modern home. It can provide a fortress of solitude for the movie enthusiast or audiophile who needs the occasional break from the rigors of their daily routine. After all, what delivers a better escape from reality than an indestructible cyborg from the future reigning down Terminator terror on a 72-inch HDTV with surround sound?

The immersive experience of a professionally designed home theatre room has seen many incarnations over recent decades – ranging from a mammoth rear-projection screen and visible stacks of equipment with giant speakers everywhere to more minimalist versions of high-tech gear and a screen nearly as thin as a credit card. So, what’s hot in home theatre design today?

  • A Room with a View: You don’t need to be strictly a movie guy or gal to enjoy a home theater room. Some people like to go all out with the movie decor by putting an old fashioned popcorn machine in the back, installing stadium seating, and even throwing down a red carpet at the entry way. But if that’s not your thing, you can design your room as more of a generalized viewing room. Instead of movie style recliners, buy a big comfy sectional couch. You can customize the theme of your room to best accommodate your preferences – whether that’s watching sports, the nightly news or family movie night.
  • Hidden Technology: It used to be a contest among A/V enthusiasts… to see how big your speakers could be. The more wires and more complex your setup looked, the more impressive it appeared. That’s not the case anymore. Current trends are to buy small speakers that pack a powerful punch in their diminutive appearance. Hide that 72-inch screen behind a wall or use a state-of-the-art front projector on a pull-down screen. As far as the wires go, don’t forget how far wireless technologies have come in the last five years. These days, simplicity and quality trump complexity.
  • Super Sized: Americans still love to go big with the screen size. In fact, screens have actually breached the triple digit mark now with a 110-inch model being available. Of course, logic dictates that you need to do some careful measuring before trying to fit that baby into most home theater rooms. In fact, you might need to carve out a bigger doorway just to get it in the house.
